In the early to mid 1930’s, J.C.Tolson, a.ka. Young Apollon, had an English penny attached to a 65 pound block-weight to use as a challenge lift in his shows. Tolson would lift the weight using only his thumb and forefinger as a demonstration of his tremendous pinch.
 
Author and historian, David Willoughby reported “Out of twenty other strong-men who tried to lift this weight, in the manner that Tolson had employed, only one succeeded. The English penny is approximately the same size as a U.S. fifty cent piece.
