Night of Miracles

April 29, 2008

I arrived back home late Sunday night from a great time in Turkey. My purpose there was twofold: (1) to appear on the television program called Night of Miracles and (2) to do some filming for one of my newest videos- Crazy Powerful, which is scheduled for release late summer.

I cannot express how much I love performing. Mainly because though my strength I have been able to inspire and motivate others to be the best they can be in life- which is something that I truly believe I was destined to do. It is something that I highly recommend for individuals who have a heart for people. So much so that it is one of the main reasons I created my Super-Human Coaching and Oldetime Strongman University Double Program.

In these programs I coach you on how to become mentally, physically and spiritually strong. Plus I teach you step-by-step how to perform the same feats of strength that have brought me into the international limelight as a strength entertainer and motivational and inspirational speaker.

Here’s is a recent email I got from one of my students:

You are a man of your word. The first time I ever saw your work was when I bought the Odd Object Bending and Breaking DVD. I then bought all of your DVDs--that was in January of 2007. You said "...Do this (exercise, training, believe) and you will be able to do these things.."

I have now focused exclusively on training to be a professional strongman (last 18 months). In the last 2 months, I have done 10 different shows and made some nice cash which I used to take my wife out to thank her for my crazy training and all the stuff I break.

Some of my accomplishments are:
Bent a #5 St. Croix forged draft horseshoe
Triple Vertical tear with a 1,200 page phone book wrapped in duct tape
Bent a 60D spike behind my back while hand cuffed
Bent a 12" Harden steel spike across the back of my head into a U

Most importantly, I now submit to the King of Kings every day. I still make mistakes, but the fight goes on, and I don’t quit.

I consider you my Mentor and I am happy you have continued to share your love of Strongman and the way of strength with us.

I recently was offered a series of shows across the state of ND. They are paying a very nice amount for my shows, as well as travel and tools to use during the show. Additionally, I have been booked for 15 different events (paid) across the next 5 months. None of this would have happened this fast without your guidance and inspiration.

Thunder May Roar ...

April 21, 2008

Club swinging is one of the oldest forms of exercise. While the original intent was surely for battle, the benefits derived during the preparation for war were more than just strategic. Cub swinging has, and always will, build tendons, ligaments and muscle. That’s why I swing clubs.

I especially like the way clubs work my shoulders. Not only have I gotten stronger from their use, I have built more muscular endurance in the process. I truly believe that if you wanna build oldetime traditional strength- then you have to pay a visit to the oldetime traditional processes.

Build the shoulders of Hercules and the swing of Thor through our loadable thick handle globe clubs. But, I must warn you … Thunder may roar and lightning might crack when you’re swinging them.

All American Gripster

April 21, 2008

It seems like Two-Time All American Hammer Thrower, Aaron Corcorran from Tucson, Arizona just looks at steel and it bends from shear fright! The 34 year old powerhouse won the “Show of Hands Grip Cup” in Forth Worth, Texas this past Saturday with some incredible bending and crushing.

Aaron and I had lunch today in Houston and he presented me with this 5/16” x 6.5 inch piece of square stainless steel stock he destroyed. It will go in my collection of items bent by other greats such as the Mighty Atom, Slim the Hammer Man, John Brookfield and Pat Povilaitis to name a few.

Spike Howards

April 21, 2008

This is an old wire photo of wrestler and strongman Spike Howards. It is credited to “World Wide” and was taken on June 18, 1942.

The copy on the photo says:

“At 65, Stanley Edward (Spike) Howards of Philadelphia has a 14 inch chest expansion. One of this professional strong man's favorite tricks, which he'll do for any visitor, is to wrap a powerful steel chain around his deflated chest--then inhale, as pictured, and snap it. Spike's called the world champion blood donor. He has given 957 transfusions at the last count. He hopes to reach 1,000. He's never been ill--never had so much as a cold.”

Well, I don’t know much about blood transfusions, but I do know a little about chain breaking. The Mighty Atom began doing this feat many years before passing it on to his protégé, Slim the Hammer Man. And after a half of century and mucho broken chains … Slim passes it on to you.

704 Pounds

April 18, 2008

George Olesen of Denmark has set a good many world records in the feats of strength world. Probably the most impressive of which is his world record 704 pound one finger lift. George set this record by standing on a forklift-raised pallet and lifting 18 cases of beer stacked on top of each other.

At 5’11” tall and 245 pounds, George is not your typical strongman. His records are all over the map- ranging from everything to pressing beer kegs to supporting a 9000 pound elephant as it walked over him! And his right arm is also not typical. It is 3” larger than his left, measuring 23”- which he credits to so much one finger lifting.

I have always enjoyed doing finger lifts as well because it can be an extremely showy feat of strength when mastered. You can be so versatile with the feat. For example I regularly lift a refrigerator with my middle finger in my shows.  As you can imagine, since the fridge is much bigger than me, it goes over really big!

In this months Oldetime Strongman University lesson I discuss the finger lift. In fact I show you in detail some of the various types of “finger rings” used, plus the different ways the finger lift it is performed. Also included in the lesson is an eight page report on creativity and stage presentation concerning feats of strength, plus my Super-Human Coaching Newsletter- which contains a great outdoor workout that I know you won’t want to miss.

If you haven’t already done so, and you’re interested in gaining all round strength, than I would highly suggest you check out this program. I only have about a fifteen left of this month’s lesson so don’t wait or you might miss out!

That Chrome Dumbell

April 18, 2008

I have had several inquiries about this chrome dumbbell that appears in several of my videos. It is actually an Iron Master Dumbell made by Osmo Kiiha. After having it for a few years I had it altered, adding inner sleeves and chrome.

York Aristocrat Dumbell Set

April 14, 2008

My wife and I just got back from spending 5 days in Wichita, Kansas where I put on four programs for the Ark Church. It was both a wonderful and fruitful time with some great people.

When I am traveling, I always try and sneak in a visit to some of the local antique shops to see if I can find some vintage weightlifting/strongman paraphernalia.  This time was no different, and as a result of my efforts I picked up a pair of York Aristocrat Dumbells. They are the ones with the key shaped collars.

When I was in Maine several weeks ago I found the ball dumbell in the center. While it is certainly very old, I’m not exactly sure when or where or it was manufactured. Anyone know?

Behind the vintage dumbells sits a hot item we carry called the Dumbball. As you can see, it has a sphere for a handle. I will tell you what- this baby works.  Especially when you are doing hammer curls!

Like a Piece of Gold

April 12, 2008

We all know that there are a lot of exercises that you can do to build power. This is especially true when it comes to your grip.

One of the best ways to exercise the wrist and hand is to perform plate curls and plate wrist curls. A typical plate curl is done by grasping a plate on the edge and with extended fingers underneath and your thumb over the outer edge- curl the weight just like you would a normal curl. What makes the difference is the stress that is placed on your wrist because of the weight extended outside the fingers.

There are many ways to do plate curls. You can even do them if you don’t own any weights.  Just pickup a concrete paving block for a few bucks and you are all set. This method will even toughen the skin because of the coarse surface of the concrete.

But if you are really serious about plate curls you will want to pick up our lever pinch block. The great thing about this “piece of gold” is that you can perform this exercise making micro increases in "weight" adjustments down the lever rod- which we all know is something that cannot be done with a fixed plate or object.

Can you afford to sacrifice such progression? Not if you are serious about strength! -Dennis

Your Piece of "Gold"

Be a Donald

April 04, 2008

Since I am headed back on the road next week with my speaking engagements/performances I have been playing catch up at my desk tonight so that I don’t leave any loose ends.  I have four shows in the states to hit over the next couple of weeks, then I am off to Istanbul, Turkey to do a popular television show in that country.  So needless to say, time is precious and I need to make the best of it if I want to achieve my plans ahead.

Have you ever wondered how it is that some people can do so much in a day while others accomplish so little? I don’t believe for a moment that men like Donald Trump, Richard Branson, and Bill Gates are in the business of wasting time and it shows in what they have built. On the other hand so many others who have the same number of hours in their day show so little in the way of production. Why? I believe it is just like anything else. It all comes down to how we think, do we have a vision and how bad do we want to see our vision come alive.

Let me encourage you to think about what you want out of life and really go after it. I did and because of it I have gotten the chance to see the world, spend more time with my family, help others and make a good living at doing what I love.

Take a few moments over the weekend to really map out a plan for what you want and go for it- Because the only person keeping your vision from coming alive is you.

Oh yeah, I decided to rip a deck of cards during a little break from catching up. This is what it looks like when you notch a deck of cards!
